Communication
SHE governance

Effective Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) communication is an integral part of improving the business Performance.

Our SHE communication strategy aims to fully support the business and its core values and defines objectives, themes, tactics and tools needed for delivery.  Engaging Leaders and Regional SHE Networks is key and high level accountabilities and responsibilities are defined. The AstraZeneca SHE communications network team supports the implementation of this strategy.

AstraZeneca has many stakeholders who wish to exchange information about SHE matters according to their specific interests (ie employees, financial analysts, students) or when specific assurance is sought on how the Company manages SHE (eg shareholders, neighbours). Questions are posed to the Company by phone, e-mail, and external websites or via personal contact. SHE issues are communicated to our stakeholders in dialogue with them, via the external web page and by appropriate meetings.

The objectives for the Company’s SHE communication are to support AstraZeneca and all employees by providing strategic, value-adding SHE perspective and information to help drive performance at individual, team and company level and to be instrumental in providing a focus and understanding of SHE and enabling good SHE – practice to meet today's business challenges, by presenting information in a coherent and consistent manner. The key challenge in 2007 is for each region to develop and deliver communications plans with particular alignment of SHE Communications to the core SHE objectives.

Internally, there are a range of SHE-specfiic communication tools available:
> Annual SHE Management Review reports for SET and the functions
> The SHE Foresight and the R&D Bulletins which were distributed electronically 14 times in 2006
> Newsletter for the SHE professional network, an electronic newsletter which is issued around 4 times a year and which was down loaded around 900 times per issue in 2006
> The SHE World publication which was issued in 10 000 printed copies and a web version which was down loaded 6082 times in 2006
> The Global SHE Website, which is a primary communications channel for SHE matters such as the SHE framework, organisation and support, SHE topics, information and good practice. The number of visits in 2006 was 64,709.
> A searchable database, which currently contains around 120 stories of good SHE practice and contacts from the sites around the world.

In addition, SHE messages are delivered via other Company communication tools such as:
> The Source magazine and Source-on-line (printed magazine and web news aimed for the 1000 top managers) which contained two SHE messages in 2006
> AZone web pages (web news aimed for all employees), which communicated five key SHE messages in 2006.
