Compound management

AstraZeneca’s scientists around the world need to be provided with an efficient and timely supply of a large range of solid and solution samples in order to satisfy HTS and other screening operations. The Compound Management group at Alderley Park has primary responsibility for managing this need.

The group deals with

  • compound selections and acquisitions
  • registration support
  • materials handling
  • sample ordering
  • dispensary activities

It supplies and receives both solid and solubilised samples and has strong links to AstraZeneca’s HTS sites in Sweden, the UK and the US.

The Compound Management Group is also the primary link to a natural products collaboration in Australia. Many of the medicines used today derive originally from nature and AstraZeneca R&D at Griffith University (AZGU) investigates plants and marine organisms collected from Australia's rain forests and oceans in the search for novel medicines. Samples are extracted to form an extract library and, using automated screening processes, the extracts are screened for activity. Then, state-of-the-art technology is used to isolate the active compounds and determine their structure. Once their structure has been determined, these natural compounds can be made synthetically in larger quantities.
