AstraZeneca has a strong commitment to monitoring the discharge of substances from our activities (see PIE section). Whilst we monitor and report on aggregate effluent discharge volumes, we do not currently collate information across all our major sites on the destination of individual discharges. This is something we are likely to address as we continue our work to further develop our understanding of PiE issues and the most appropriate way to provide transparent and meaningful information to our stakeholders would form an important part of that exercise.

Our due diligence process includes an assessment of those CR and social issues relevant to our sector, such as patient safety, sales and marketing practices, employment practices and SHE governance. Therefore, we believe this indicator is only partially applicable to our operations.

We have documented extensively our commitment to ensuring a fair and balanced process for the planned restructuring that has taken place in AstraZeneca over the past year. This has included consultation with some of the external communities affected by business change. We have also reported on our community and health sponsorhip programmes. However, given the specific definition of this indicator to include the effects of 'entering, operating, and exiting' on communities we believe this indicator is only partially applicable to our operations.
