ASTRAZENECA COMMITS TO PARTNERING WITH INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME AND SUPPORTING CHINA’S HEALTHCARE REFORM OVER THE LONG TERM

AstraZeneca today announced a collaboration with Peking University’s (PKU) Guanghua School of Management (GSM) to fund the China Center for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (CCPOR) in a series of research and educational programmes aimed at supporting reform of China’s healthcare system.
Sir Tom McKillop, AstraZeneca’s Chief Executive, and Prof. Ping Hao, Vice President of PKU, attended the signing ceremony for the partnership programme in Beijing, as Mr. Steen Kroyer, President of AstraZeneca China, and Associate Dean Weiying Zhang of GSM, signed a letter of intent.

“China needs deeper health economic expertise to help continue the reform of the healthcare system.” said Associate Dean Weiying Zhang. “Our mission is to promote and conduct research and training on the cost- effectiveness of pharmaceuticals, policies and services. Within this framework we will address such issues as policy-making, pricing, insurance (reimbursement) and hospital management. We are proud to have the dedicated and long-term support of such a world-leading pharmaceutical company and hope that our partnership with AstraZeneca will help us become an incubator for China’s next generation of health economists.”

“We are honoured to work with such a well-known top school in China as PKU-GSM and are committed to contributing to China’s healthcare system through the GSM-AstraZeneca programmes” said Sir Tom McKillop, “As a leading global developer and manufacturer of innovative medicine with a history of promoting education in science and health, we feel strongly that this pioneering programme will play an important role in educating future decision-makers and key influencers in China’s healthcare sector.”

During the first three years, AstraZeneca will provide RMB 3 million ($360,000) in sponsorship to help the CCPOR set up and establish its research, advising and training programmes for government officials, hospital executives and pharmacy directors. Specifically, the sponsorship will help fund a series of research seminars hosted by international experts, sponsor two-year fellowship programmes for trainees, hosted alternatively by the School and AstraZeneca, and facilitate short-term training programmes across the country.

After the signing ceremony, Sir Tom McKillop gave a lecture to PKU students and faculty, as well as industry experts, where he outlined the importance of fostering innovation across all areas of the healthcare industry. “China is in a promising position to strengthen its R&D capabilities in collaboration with a vibrant healthcare industry,” he said. “It will be important to create a supportive infrastructure in order to fully leverage these opportunities.”
