'Faslodex' (fulvestrant) is a new type of endocrine treatment for advanced breast cancer, with a distinct and different mode of action. It is an Estrogen Receptor Antagonist with no agonist effects. In clinical trials, 'Faslodex' was shown to be at least as effective as the 3rd generation aromatase inhibitor, 'Arimidex' (anastrozole), with a favourable tolerability profile, in patients with advanced breast cancer who had progressed on antioestrogen therapy. 'Faslodex' is administered as a once monthly injection. 'Faslodex' is already approved in over 50 countries worldwide. In the US 'Faslodex' is indicated for the treatment of hormone receptor positive metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following antiestrogen therapy.
In Brazil 'Faslodex' is indicated for the treatment of patients with hormonal receptor-positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following endocrine therapy.
In the EU, Norway and Iceland 'Faslodex' has now been approved in the European Union, including the 10 new accession countries, which joined in May 2004. In these countries 'Faslodex' is approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women with oestrogen receptor positive, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer for disease relapse on or after adjuvant antioestrogen therapy or disease progression on therapy with an antioestrogen.
Switzerland 'Faslodex' is indicated for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic, estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer in women who have undergone natural or induced menopause and whose disease has progressed after hormone therapy.
In addition a large clinical trial program, investigating alternative dose regimens and Faslodex in combination with other endocrine or novel targeted therapies is currently ongoing.
